News from the field : Wednesday September 24th

Today the TRANSEMED team started its near source tracking in Istanbul. First target are traffic emissions which represent almost 50% of VOC emissions in Great Istanbul Area (Markakis et al., 2012). Our sampling device was installed during one day on the roadway side of a large boulevard located in Istanbul where the continuous monitoring site is located.

The sampling device include an automatic sampler with sorbent tubes and canisters. The goal is to determine VOC emission profiles from the running fleet in real world conditions and at different times of the day. These emissions include vehicle exhaust and fuel evaporative emissions.

ChArMEx continues its eastward refocus by helping sister project TRANSEMED deploy in the eastern mediterranean

After the GLAM airborne summer campaign last August (2014) that consisted in measuring pollutants gradients above the mediterranean from France to Cyprus, ChArMEx takes a further step in its eastward relocation of its activities by participating to the TRANSEMED 2014 field campaign in Istanbul.

ChArMEx sister project TRANSEMED (TRANSport Emissions and Mitigation in the East meDiterranean) focuses on the assesment of the atmospheric gas and particles concentration inside the eastern mediterranean largest cities which are among the greatest emitters of the main chemical species such as VOC and particles.

After visiting Beyrouth in 2011 and 2012 (sister project ECOCEM) where it was found that VOC concentration levels were twice as large as those of Paris, teams will now focus on Istanbul emissions which, with a population of 13.8 millions of people, is the second largest city of the eastern mediterranean after Cairo.

From September the 16th to September the 30th, teams from the LISA (Laboratoire Interuniversitaire des Systèmes Atmosphériques), Mines Douai, Abant Izzet Baysal University (Turkey) and the University Saint Joseph of Beyrouth (Lebanon) will install a shelter in the Great Istanbul Area in which they will be measuring both VOC (PTRMS, GC-FID), ozone, carbon monoxyde, nitrogen oxydes and particles parameters (filters). Measurements will also be made in the immediate vicinity of heavy trafic and gas stations in order to build emission profiles that will be used to identify sources.

TRANSEMED is funded by the bilateral project CNRS-Tübitak 2013-2014, ENVIMED 2014-2015, MISTRALS, ChArMEx and ARMINES

The 2014 ChArMEx field campaign has now started.

The first part called ChArMEx-2014/SAFMED+ takes place in the northwestern part of the Mediterranean basin form June 24 juin to July 11.

It is dedicated to the study of secondary organic aerosol formation which is very active in the Mediterranean region due to its hot, dry, sunny weather.

In this first part of the 2014 field campaign teams will fly one of the French atmospheric research aircrafts (ATR-42) operated by SAFIRE onboard which a number of state of the art instruments will capture the chemical species and the processes involved in the formation of secondary organic aerosol. Flights will take place above teh mediterranean basin and above forests in the south of France which are great emitters of volatile organic compounds that are known to be organic aerosol and ozone precursors.
