What is ARCHIMEDES ?

ARCHIMEDES Preparation Phase aims at building a ready-to-run international research project dedicated to estimating the health and economic impact of air pollution and climate in the Mediterranean with a focus on the Southern and Eastern regions.

In 2014, WHO has released new evidence that ambient air pollution are among the most important risks to health in eastern Mediterranean becoming one of the top priorities of the institution (Health Strategy and Action Plan 2014-19). Studies project that it will even be a bigger problem in the future overpassing the impact of drinking poor quality waters or the impact of malaria1!

This research project will be designed by a network of Mediterranean experts all committed to addressing the question of air and climate health impact in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean. It will take advantage of the ongoing basin-wide effort initiated by ChArMEx to characterize the Mediterranean air quality, embarking teams from within the health impact assessment community that have been coordinating recent successful studies in Europe and western Mediterranean basin (APHEKOM, MED-Particles).

Thanks to the recent ChArMEx field campaigns it is now possible to test and improve the models that are used to predict the evolution of air quality and climate in the Mediterranean region. These improved models can then be used to infer what will be the evolution of air quality and climate in the future, and calculate the induced sanitary and economic impact.

But the use of response functions established for western countries is an issue. Impact estimates could be much less uncertain if we could run toxicological and epidemiological studies in regions where these studies are scarce. This is what ARCHIMEDES is planned for.

The research program should be ready by mid-2017 at the latest.

ARCHIMEDES Preparation Phase has received support from the ENVI-MED Program.
